Reduce Risk of Car Accident During Stormy Winter Ahead

Posted in Miscellaneous by on January 4th, 2013

The Northeast was quite fortunate this past winter, as the weather conditions were exceptionally mild and dry. However, it is predicted that we will not be so lucky this time around. According to AccuWeather.com, winter 2012-2013 will produce several big storms for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, one of which we experienced this past week. For snow lovers, the expected increase in snowfall is great news. For others, these predicted circumstances are not so convenient, especially for individuals with long commutes to and from work.

It is no secret that more snowfall equates to dangerous road conditions, decreased visibility, potential lane obstruction and an overall higher risk of every type of accident, including car accidents. At Wynn & Wynn, we want to prepare you by providing you with the best driving tips to make it safely through a winter storm. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation, as well as several other reliable sources, advises the following:

  1. Make sure your vehicle is winterized, your gas tank is full and you are equipped with winter car supplies such as, booster cables, snow scrapers, a flashlight, blankets, winter hats, scarves and boots, extra windshield fluid/antifreeze, etc.
  2. Clear snow from your vehicle and turn on your lights;
  3. Leave room for stopping between yourself and the vehicle in front of you;
  4. Pay attention and adhere to speed limits;
  5. Be aware of current road conditions;
  6. Use brakes with caution;
  7. Be extra cautious on bridges and highway ramps, as these areas are usually more dangerous;
  8. Do not use cruise control or be over confident in a 4-wheel drive vehicle;
  9. Avoid cutting in front of trucks and leave room for maintenance vehicles – stay back at least 200 feet and do not pass on the right;
  10. Slow down and wear your seat belt at all times.
